The U.S. Navy provided its own fire protection for the Hudson River National Defense Reserve Fleet.

Reserve Fleet anchored in Hudson off Jones Point, NY

The National Defense Reserve Fleet has a twofold purpose. The first is to provide a ready reserve of ships in a national emergency, the second is to serve as a govt. storage depot for surplus wheat. At present some 43 ships store surplus grain out of a total of 178 vessels in the "ghost fleet" of merchant marine ships. This is one of three such fleets on the Atlantic Coast. There are two others on the Gulf and three more on the Pacific Coast. They are maintained by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
