A Telescoping Platform uses some form of box-beam boom design, versus the traditional open "U" truss ladder design of a Ladder Platform.

The two most prevalent designs are the Sutphen open lattice truss boom, and the Aerialscope closed stressed skin boom. The Sutphen is constructed entirely of aluminum and is huck-bolted in lieu of welding. The Aerialscope's main boom is constructed of steel, with the extension booms constructed of aluminum.

These box-beam booms often feature some form of escape ladder fastened to the boom, however climbing the boom itself is often difficult (Sutphen) or impossible (Aerialscope).
